Plastic material handling carts: choose according to what you move

When moving ingredients, raw materials or solid products, choosing a plastic cart starts with its intended use. What will it hold? How will it be filled, moved, emptied and washed? Volume matters, but it is not enough to determine the right configuration.

At Agrico, we help you compare food-grade box trucks, industrial box trucks and their accessories according to your operations. A container intended for solids should not be selected for liquids simply because its dimensions fit.

Food-grade or industrial cart: which configuration should you choose?

Food-grade box trucks

For handling food or ingredients, consider our FDA food-grade carts and buggies. The range includes double-wall and triple-wall constructions. Your choice depends on the contents, the weight to be moved and the cleaning conditions.

In a food processing environment, we also consider access to the inside of the container and how it will be emptied. If your application involves liquids or semi-liquid products, have the appropriate model confirmed before ordering. The “food-grade” designation alone does not establish suitability for every use.

Industrial box trucks

For moving solid materials, consider our industrial box trucks. Light-duty, standard-duty and heavy-duty configurations are available, with differences in construction and load capacity.

These carts can meet collection or handling needs for textiles, parts and other solid materials. We select the configuration according to the actual weight and planned movements, rather than relying only on container volume. TS configurations are intended for solids only.

For warehouses and distribution centres, also specify passage widths and the space available at loading and unloading points.

Although the container may be made from resin that complies with FDA requirements for food contact, the base of these industrial configurations is made of steel or plywood, which we do not recommend in food processing plants. These configurations are mainly used in industrial settings. A food-grade version is available on request.

If you need to cover the contents, consider our cart lids. Compatibility and purchasing conditions vary. Several are available only with the cart, so plan for this need when ordering.

What to check before ordering

Distinguish volume from load capacity

Capacity in litres describes volume. Load capacity describes the allowable weight. These are separate criteria: a container large enough for your contents is not necessarily suitable for their weight.

Tell us what it will hold and the maximum expected weight. We can guide you towards a configuration that meets both needs.

Consider the route and washing conditions

Before choosing, check the doors, aisles, turns and thresholds the cart will need to pass through. Also specify whether it will travel a short distance or move between several work areas.

Washing deserves the same attention. We consider the entire cart, including the base and casters. A plastic container does not mean that every component is plastic: some industrial configurations have a steel or plywood base.

Keep your pallet boxes when appropriate

If your products are already in pallet boxes, consider the pallet box cart and pallet boxes on casters. These are useful options to consider before planning to transfer the contents into a box truck. Compatibility with the pallet box and movement constraints must be checked before selecting this solution.

Frequently asked questions

Can an industrial box truck be used for liquids?

No, TS series box trucks are intended for solids only. For liquids, choose a food-grade box truck, a pallet box on casters or a pallet box placed on a cart specifically designed for that purpose. In every case, we must confirm that the selected configuration is suitable for liquids and the expected weight.

Are all plastic carts suitable for food?

No. First, check whether the plastic complies with FDA requirements for food contact. If it does, you must also check the materials used in the other cart components, such as the casters and their frame, the drain and the reinforcement base, if present.

Can the lid be ordered later?

Not always. Several lids are sold only with the cart. Confirm this option before placing your order.
