Stainless steel hose clamps: standard or HD?

A hose clamp secures a hose onto a compatible fitting. To choose one, we consider the outside diameter to be clamped, the hose construction, the fitting and the working conditions. The hose diameter provides a starting point, but it is not enough to confirm the selection.

Agrico offers standard and HD clamps, sold individually, to complement your industrial hoses. We compare the two configurations based on the assembly required, without assigning a pressure or vacuum rating to the clamp alone.

What is the difference between a standard clamp and an HD clamp?

Standard: a narrow band and a wider adjustment range

Standard clamps have a 301 stainless steel band and a 410 stainless steel screw housing. Their hexagonal screw head also has a slot for a flat-blade screwdriver.

Their clamping range is wider than that of HD clamps for the corresponding nominal hose size. This adjustment range makes it easier to accommodate different outside diameters, provided the clamp limits and hose compatibility are respected.

HD: a wider band and a narrower adjustment range

HD clamps have a 430 stainless steel band and a galvanized steel bolt. Their wider band and bevelled edges distinguish this configuration from the standard version. They are tightened with a wrench.

We can assess them for compatible transfer, suction or water discharge assemblies. However, their narrower adjustment range requires careful verification of the diameter to be clamped. The HD designation alone does not confirm the assembly’s allowable working pressure.

Choosing the right clamp size

The important distinction is between the nominal hose diameter and the outside diameter that the clamp must fit around. Two hoses with the same inside diameter can have different wall thicknesses and construction.

We therefore check the clamp’s minimum and maximum clamping diameters rather than relying only on a designation such as 1", 2" or 3".

The fitting is also part of the selection. NPT threaded hose barb adapters connect a compatible hose to a threaded connection. Within the Camlock fitting range, hose shank fittings differ from threaded fittings: the clamp is used on the hose side, depending on the configuration selected.

Checking the hose and operating conditions

For drinking water supply, we first select a suitable potable water hose. A stainless steel clamp does not make a hose suitable for food contact and does not replace verification of the components in contact with the liquid.

For an application involving suction, we assess a compatible suction and discharge hose. For discharge-only draining, a discharge hose may be suitable, depending on the conditions. You can also consider assembled discharge hoses, which already include their fittings.

In a tank installation, we also check the connection to ball valves and bulkhead fittings. The liquid being handled, temperature, pressure or vacuum, and outdoor exposure remain selection criteria for the complete assembly.

Frequently asked questions about hose clamps

Will a clamp for a 2" hose fit every 2" hose?

We must check the outside diameter to be clamped and the clamp’s adjustment range, even when its size designation matches the hose diameter. The hose wall thickness and construction can differ even when its inside diameter is identical.

Can an HD clamp increase the hose’s pressure rating?

No. An HD clamp does not allow you to exceed the hose’s allowable working pressure. The limits of the hose, fitting and assembly must all be checked.

Are all HD clamp components stainless steel?

The HD clamps offered have a 430 stainless steel band and a galvanized steel bolt. We take this difference into account when the assembly is exposed to moisture, cleaning products or a corrosive environment.
