Polypropylene and PVC Ball Valves for Tanks

To open or close a tank outlet, choose a valve according to the liquid, frequency of use and required connection. Diameter alone is not enough: the body material, gasket and operating conditions must also be suitable.

We offer ball valves made of polypropylene, glass-reinforced polypropylene and PVC. Sizes in this category range from 1/2 to 4 inches, depending on the valve family. Configurations include NPT threaded connections, solvent-weld sockets and a version with a male Camlock outlet.

Which Valve Family Should You Choose?

For occasional use, a light-duty valve may be suitable. When the handle is operated regularly in a commercial or industrial installation, choose a configuration intended for that use after confirming the liquid and actual operating conditions.

Choose a valve family according to use and connection
FamilyIntended useConnection by versionWhat to check
PolypropyleneOccasional use, light dutyFemale NPT thread with male nipple includedOperating frequency and conditions
Glass-reinforced polypropyleneFrequent use, industrial serviceNPT thread with male nipple included, or male NPT × male CamlockConfiguration of both ends
PVCCommercial or industrial useSocket and threaded ends supplied, except for the 3-inch size, which requires a selection when orderingEnd connections and available EPDM or Viton gasket

An industrial-duty valve is not automatically compatible with every chemical. Mechanical suitability and material compatibility require separate checks.

EPDM or Viton: Check the Gasket as Well as the Body

Do not select a valve solely because its body is PVC or polypropylene. The liquid also comes into contact with sealing components.

The polypropylene valves shown here are offered with EPDM gaskets. The PVC family includes versions with EPDM gaskets and others with Viton gaskets. Available choices depend on the size and configuration.

Before ordering, specify the liquid, its concentration and its actual temperature. Viton is not a universal replacement for EPDM. This verification applies to different tank applications and industries.

Distinguish Male and Female Connections

NPT Threaded Connections

A practical detail deserves attention: several valves are described as male × female because a male nipple is included with a valve that has female connections. Check what is supplied before adding a duplicate fitting.

To connect a valve to a tank, choose a compatible bulkhead fitting. A male × male NPT nipple can join two female connections.

If the diameters differ, distinguish male × male reducing nipples from male × female reducing bushings. To change the connection direction, consider elbow fittings.

Connecting to PVC Piping

Solvent-weld sockets and threaded connections serve different installations. Confirm the configuration before preparing the piping.

Male-threaded PVC adapters with solvent-weld sockets provide a transition between these connection types when dimensions and materials match.

Connecting to a Hose

For a quick connection, a male Camlock outlet accepts a matching female Camlock coupler. Choose Camlock fittings according to both ends being connected.

For a hose installed over a barb, consider male NPT threaded hose barb adapters. Check the hose diameter and threaded connection diameter separately.

Pressure and Temperature: Consider Both Together

A pressure rating given at a specific temperature does not automatically apply at another temperature. Check the limits of the selected valve, fittings, gaskets and hose.

If a pump is used, specify the expected pressure or suction conditions. A maximum pressure rating does not establish suitability for suction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Valve in This Category Replace an IBC Tote Valve?

No. Replacing the original valve requires a valve specifically designed for the tote brand and model concerned. To add a valve from this category, use a compatible connection at the outlet of the existing valve instead. To replace an original Mauser valve, see our IBC tote tank parts.

Do All PVC Valves Use Solvent-Weld Connections?

The PVC valves we offer come with both socket ends and NPT threaded ends, except for the 3-inch valves. For that size, select the threaded or socket version when ordering; both options are not supplied together.

What Information Is Needed to Choose a Valve?

The liquid, concentration, temperature, diameter, existing connections, frequency of use and pressure or suction conditions.

Need Help Confirming Your Choice?

Our consultation service helps you choose the valve and fittings for your installation. A photo of the existing connections makes identification easier.
