Free-standing horizontal tanks can be used to store or transport compatible liquids, including water, maple sap and certain agricultural or industrial liquids. Their lower height compared with a vertical tank can also help where space is limited. Capacity alone is not enough to choose a model: the liquid, vehicle or trailer, support, tie-down method, and filling and draining arrangements all matter.
This category includes cylindrical HL models and elliptical EL models. The models shown have specific gravity ratings that include 1.5 and 1.9. Capacity, dimensions and included steel bands vary by model.
| Series | Shape | Selection consideration | Support and tie-down |
|---|---|---|---|
| HL | Cylindrical, with molded legs | Compare the available height and width on the vehicle or at the installation site | Steel bands are optional for models of 525 US gallons or less and included starting at 725 US gallons. |
| EL | Elliptical, with molded legs | Consider the lower profile when limited height or a lower centre of gravity matters to the project | Steel bands are required and included with every model, even for stationary storage. |
The molded legs help limit liquid movement inside the tank, but they do not replace proper tie-downs. The lower profile of an EL tank may be useful; the stability of the tank, liquid and vehicle together must still be checked.
A tank rated for a specific gravity of 1.9 can be considered for denser liquids than a model rated 1.5, subject to the conditions for the selected model. That rating does not guarantee chemical compatibility. For a fertilizer, urea or treatment solution, we check the exact product, its concentration and temperature, and the materials of components in contact with it.
For water intended for human consumption or a food product, a “food-grade” designation for the plastic does not validate the entire assembly. The model, its fittings and any potable water hoses must meet the requirements of the intended use.
In the field, a request such as “I need 1,000 gallons for my trailer” leaves important questions unanswered. The tank must fit the available space, be properly supported and be secured with the movement of the liquid during travel in mind. The weight of the filled tank must also remain within the limits of the vehicle and trailer.
We confirm which steel bands are included with the model and how the assembly will be installed. Steel bands alone do not establish the vehicle’s load capacity or validate its tie-down arrangement. If the tank must fit specifically in a pickup truck bed, also compare the pickup truck tanks.
Horizontal models are presented with a lid, vent, outlet and molded graduations in US gallons. Their dimensions, features and included components should nevertheless be confirmed before purchase to avoid omissions. Before ordering, we check whether steel bands are required, where any additional connections will go, how the pump will connect, whether the vent suits the filling and draining conditions, and where the transfer hoses will run.
An outlet poorly positioned in relation to the trailer or pump can complicate installation. Agrico can help you select bulkhead fittings, valves and other required accessories before the tank reaches the site.
If the tank will remain in place and sufficient height is available, a closed-top vertical tank may better suit the storage requirement. For a format that can be handled with a forklift, consider caged IBC totes. Closed-top rectangular tanks are also worth comparing when the available space determines the tank shape.
The product, model and rules applicable to the planned transport must be checked. These tanks are not presented as UN-approved containers for transporting dangerous goods. Compatibility for storage does not, by itself, authorize transport.
No. Steel bands are optional for HL models of 525 US gallons or less; whether they are needed depends in part on the vehicle, fastening method and installation. They are included and required for HL models of 725 US gallons or more and for every EL model.
Yes, if the model and installation conditions are suitable. The base, lid access, connections and liquid compatibility must be checked as they would be for any stationary tank. Steel band requirements also apply when the tank is installed in a fixed location.
Tell us about the liquid, required capacity, specific gravity and temperature, the vehicle or installation location, and the dimensions and connections needed. We can compare HL and EL models based on the actual project.
