Male × Female NPT Threaded Reducer Bushings in Reinforced Polypropylene

A male × female NPT reducer bushing adapts a female-threaded connection to a smaller male fitting. Its external male thread screws into the existing connection, while its internal female thread receives the smaller male NPT fitting.

We offer Schedule 80 reducer bushings made of glass-reinforced polypropylene. The range includes 13 combinations, with nominal connection sizes from 1/2 to 3 inches.

To choose the right fitting, we identify both thread types and sizes. The designation “male × female” matters as much as the dimensions: it determines how the fittings can connect.

Understanding the Two Reducer Bushing Sizes

The first size identifies the external male thread. The second identifies the smaller internal female thread.

These are nominal sizes. They specify neither the exact outside diameter of the threads nor the exact inside diameter of the passage.

We therefore do not choose a reducer bushing simply by measuring its opening. Before ordering, confirm the size and thread type of both existing fittings.

Male × Female Reducer Bushing or Male × Male Reducer Nipple?

A male × female reducer bushing screws into a female connection and receives a smaller male fitting. It directly reduces a female-threaded opening while retaining a female connection.

A male × male NPT reducer nipple has two external threads instead. We choose it to join two female connections of different sizes.

A mistake to avoid: ordering the correct sizes with the wrong combination of ends. Two male fittings do not screw directly together.

Where Can a Male × Female Reducer Bushing Be Used?

Reducing a Bulkhead Fitting Connection

A female NPT bulkhead fitting can receive the reducer bushing’s male thread. The resulting female connection can then receive a smaller male NPT fitting.

The reducer bushing adapts the piping connection. It does not change the bulkhead fitting’s dimensions or the hole required in the tank.

Adapting a Valve or Piping Branch

A female NPT connection on a ball valve, tee fitting or elbow fitting can be reduced when the threads and materials are suitable.

We first check the accessories supplied with the valve. A connection already occupied by a pipe nipple no longer presents the same available end for the assembly.

Connecting a Camlock or Hose Barb Adapter

The reducer bushing’s female connection can receive a matching Camlock fitting with a male NPT thread. The Camlock end is selected separately to match the fitting being coupled.

For a hose, we use a hose barb adapter with a male NPT thread. The barb size must match the hose’s inside diameter, while the threaded size must match the reducer bushing.

Material, Liquid and Operating Conditions

Reinforced polypropylene and a Schedule 80 design do not guarantee compatibility with every liquid. We check the liquid, its concentration, its temperature and the pressure or suction conditions.

Recommended operating conditions:

• 120 PSI at −18 °C / 0 °F.
• 150 PSI at 21 °C / 70 °F.
• 90 PSI at 66 °C / 150 °F.

We also examine the materials of the other components and the seals in the connected accessories. The reducer bushing’s compatibility alone does not validate the entire assembly.

These criteria apply across the different tank applications and industries.

Reducing a connection decreases the available passage. We confirm that this choice suits the intended transfer, particularly when a pump is involved. Connection size alone does not determine the resulting flow rate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can This Reducer Bushing Be Used on an IBC Tote Valve?

Does a 3/4-Inch Thread Fit a Garden Hose?

Not automatically. The stated size does not confirm the thread type. This reducer bushing has a female NPT connection: we must check the hose or adapter thread before connecting them.

Does This Reducer Bushing Allow Quick Hose Disconnection?

No. It adapts connection sizes through threaded connections. For frequent disconnection, use a suitable detachable connection, such as a compatible Camlock.
