Food-grade plastic pallets for processing, storage and material handling

Our food-grade plastic pallets are designed for material handling and storage in food processing plants, pharmaceutical facilities, cold rooms and environments where hygiene, frequent washing and resistance to moisture are important.

The models in this category are made from virgin HDPE and colorants that comply with FDA requirements applicable to food contact. Their one-piece construction, non-porous surface and resistance to moisture facilitate cleaning, inspection and use in environments where wooden pallets may present operational limitations.

The range includes 40" x 48" food-grade pallets and 48" x 48" food-grade pallets, with either a vented or solid smooth deck. Depending on the model, they can be used for floor storage, handling on forks and certain racking configurations. Some models are also suitable for refrigerated or freezer storage, within the temperature limits specified for the product.

The choice should not, however, be based solely on dimensions. The actual load, type of racking, material handling equipment, washing method, temperature and drainage requirements can completely change which model should be selected.

Prices, minimum quantities, inventory and lead times are displayed in real time on the product pages. Sales, pickup and shipping are available within Canada.

Vented deck or solid smooth deck: which one should you choose?

Food-grade pallet with a vented deck

A vented deck promotes air circulation and water drainage during washing. It can therefore be particularly useful in cold rooms, refrigerated environments, freezers and operations where water or other liquids need to drain quickly.

The RX4048 and HDSC4848 models in this category have a vented deck. The right choice also depends on the load, handling method and type of base required.

Hygienic pallet with a solid smooth deck

A solid smooth deck eliminates openings on the top of the pallet and provides a continuous surface that is easy to wash, wipe and inspect. It is a good choice when the application requires a closed surface to prevent powders, small products or residues from falling through the pallet. The absence of openings on the upper surface also simplifies visual inspection and reduces the number of hard-to-reach areas during cleaning.

The RXHD4048-BL has a solid smooth deck as well as a retaining lip that helps limit the movement of goods on the surface.

A vented pallet is therefore not automatically more hygienic than a solid pallet, and the reverse is also true. The type of residue, washing method, drainage requirements and the way the pallet will be used on a daily basis must all be considered.

Which food-grade pallet should you choose for racking?

This is one of the criteria that is most often misunderstood. A high load capacity on the floor or on forks does not mean that a pallet can support the same load when placed in a rack.

In racking, the pallet is no longer fully supported by the floor. Its capacity depends in particular on the distance between the supports, their position, the rack configuration, load distribution, temperature and storage duration.

  • The RX4048 models currently show a rack capacity of 600 lb in their specifications.
  • The RXHD4048-BL model shows a capacity of 3,000 lb with the support configuration specified on its product page.
  • The HDSC4848-BL model is indicated as not rackable and requires adequate support underneath its base if placed in a racking system.

Before purchasing a fleet of pallets intended for racking, the pallet and the racking system should therefore be validated together. A pallet that is suitable for floor storage may be unsuitable when supported only by the beams of a pallet rack.

To better understand the differences between static load, load on forks and rack load, consult our plastic pallet buying guide.

Why use food-grade plastic pallets?

In a food processing plant, a pallet is part of the daily material handling flow. Its value therefore goes beyond simply replacing a wooden pallet. The material, construction and model selected can have a direct impact on washing, inspection, handling and equipment standardization.

  • They do not absorb moisture or swell when exposed to water.
  • They do not produce splinters and have no exposed nails.
  • Their one-piece construction facilitates visual inspection.
  • Their washable surface simplifies cleaning operations.
  • Their dimensions and weight remain consistent from one pallet of the same model to another.
  • They can be used in wet or refrigerated environments when the model's limitations are respected.
  • Colors can support the visual identification of different areas, products or uses.
  • Some models are designed for specific racking configurations.

Blue, red and green pallets can, for example, be incorporated into an internal color-coding system. Color alone, however, does not constitute an allergen or contamination control measure. It must be part of a documented procedure that includes use, cleaning and employee training.

FDA, HACCP and food-grade pallets: what you actually need to validate

The pallets in this category are made from virgin HDPE and colorants that comply with FDA requirements applicable to food contact.

This material compliance does not mean that a pallet alone guarantees the compliance of the facility or a process. Its condition, cleaning, location, use and the company's internal procedures must also be appropriate.

HACCP is not a pallet certification. It is a method for managing food safety risks. A plastic pallet can be integrated into a HACCP program when it is selected, used, inspected and cleaned in accordance with the facility's procedures.

Cleaning and inspecting food-grade plastic pallets

The cleaning method must be adapted to the pallet model, the residues present and the facility's sanitation program. Depending on the application, this may include manual washing, an industrial pallet washer or pressure washing when this method complies with the recommendations applicable to the product.

After cleaning:

  • Make sure the surfaces are clean and properly rinsed.
  • Allow the pallet to drain and dry.
  • Inspect the deck, base, runners and fork-entry points.
  • Remove from service any pallet that is cracked, severely deformed or has become difficult to clean properly.
  • Follow the concentrations, temperatures and contact times specified for the cleaning products being used.

A high load capacity or a material suitable for a food environment never replaces regular equipment inspection.

Frequently asked questions about food-grade pallets

What is the difference between a food-grade pallet and a black industrial pallet?

The food-grade pallets in this category are made from virgin HDPE and colorants that comply with FDA requirements applicable to food contact. Industrial plastic pallets are primarily intended for general material handling, transportation and storage of goods, and some models use recycled plastic.

Can a food-grade pallet be used in racking?

Only when the model has a clearly established load capacity and conditions of use for this application. Floor load capacity or load capacity on forks should not be used as the rack capacity.

Is a vented pallet more hygienic than a solid pallet?

Not automatically. A vented deck promotes drainage and air circulation. A solid smooth deck reduces openings on the top and may be easier to wipe clean. The best choice depends on the product, residues, cleaning protocol and environment.

Can different colors be used to separate allergens or areas?

Yes, they can support an internal visual identification system. They do not, however, replace written procedures, employee training, cleaning and the other controls established by the facility.

Can these pallets be used in a cold room or freezer?

The RX and RXHD models currently indicate a temperature range of -28 °C to 49 °C. Actual use must remain within the limits of the model and take into account the load, impacts, racking and duration of exposure.

Can the pallets be cleaned with a pressure washer?

Yes, when this method is compatible with the model and the facility's cleaning protocol. Pressure, temperature, chemicals used and spray distance must be controlled to avoid damaging the pallet.

Need help choosing a food-grade pallet?

Before ordering, validate the dimensions, actual load, load distribution, deck type, forklift or pallet jack, washing method, temperature and, where applicable, the exact rack configuration.

A pallet with the right dimensions is not necessarily the right pallet for your operations.
