A male NPT threaded x female socket PVC adapter connects two different types of connections: a female NPT threaded fitting on one side and PVC pipe or a socket-compatible PVC fitting on the other.
This transition is particularly useful when a plastic tank installation has a threaded connection but the piping needs to continue with solvent-welded PVC.
The adapters offered by Agrico Plastics are made of white Schedule 40 PVC and are currently available in 3/4", 1", 1-1/2", 2", 3" and 4" sizes.
It is important not to select this fitting based only on its diameter. The two ends use different connection methods.
The male side uses an NPT thread and must therefore connect to a compatible female NPT connection. The other side is a female socket designed to receive PVC pipe or a compatible PVC component of the corresponding size for solvent welding. This side is not threaded.
This distinction is particularly important when replacing an existing fitting. Two fittings with the same nominal diameter can have completely different connection types.
This fitting is useful when transitioning between a threaded component and a permanent solvent-welded PVC piping system.
For example, an installation may include a bulkhead tank fitting or a ball valve with a female NPT threaded connection. The adapter can then provide the transition to solvent-welded PVC piping when this configuration is appropriate for the installation.
However, if the installation needs to be disassembled regularly, connected to a flexible hose or equipped with a quick-disconnect connection, this type of adapter may not be the best option.
| Fitting type | Primary function | Consider it when |
|---|---|---|
| Male NPT x female socket adapter | Transition from a female NPT threaded connection to solvent-welded PVC piping | The piping needs to continue in solvent-welded PVC |
| Hose barb adapter | Transition from a threaded fitting to certain flexible hoses | The line uses a hose compatible with a hose barb connection |
| Camlock fitting | Create a connection that can be connected and disconnected quickly | The hose or equipment needs to be connected and disconnected regularly |
| Elbow fitting | Change the direction of the piping | The available space or piping route requires a 45° or 90° change in direction |
| Threaded reducer | Make certain transitions between connection sizes or configurations | The components being connected have different nominal diameters or connection configurations |
The correct fitting is therefore not simply the one with the right diameter. Look at what comes before and after it: bulkhead fitting, valve, rigid piping, flexible hose or a removable connection.
The adapters in this category are designed for a recommended operating condition of 200 PSI at 23 °C.
This value should not be interpreted as a universal allowable pressure under all operating conditions. Temperature, the liquid being transferred and the other components in the installation must also be considered.
PVC must be compatible with the liquid being handled. In a complete installation, the actual operating limit is not necessarily determined by this adapter: a valve, bulkhead fitting, pipe or another component may have different operating conditions.
The complete system should therefore be evaluated rather than considering a single fitting in isolation.
Before ordering, identify the two connections you need to join.
If you have a female NPT connection and want to continue with solvent-welded PVC piping, this adapter can provide the required transition.
If the existing connection is already male NPT, this adapter cannot thread directly onto it because its threaded end is also male. A female threaded fitting or another connection configuration will be required.
Likewise, the socket end is not intended to receive a threaded fitting simply because both components have the same nominal diameter.
In a tank installation, this adapter may be part of an assembly that includes a bulkhead fitting, ball valve and the piping used to transfer the liquid.
The correct fitting must integrate properly with the connections before and after it. For storage and liquid-transfer projects, you can also visit our Tanks sector to better understand the different configurations and applications.
It is a female socket connection designed for solvent welding. The opposite end has a male NPT thread.
Yes, if the valve has a female NPT connection of the same diameter and the materials and operating conditions are compatible. Some PVC valves are available with different connection configurations, so the exact connection on the valve must be verified.
This fitting is designed to transition to a solvent-welded PVC connection. To connect directly to a flexible hose, a hose barb adapter or another fitting designed for the hose is generally more appropriate.
First verify the diameter, thread gender, NPT standard and the connection required on the other side. Agrico Plastics can help determine which fittings are required to complete your installation without adding unnecessary adapters. Consult our technical support service.
