Vertical open top tanks for mixing, soaking and cleaning

Vertical open top tanks provide full access to the contents from above. This configuration makes it easier to add ingredients, soak materials and clean between batches. They are used for food mixtures, fertilizers and chemicals, once the application has been validated.

OT series tanks are self-supporting, flat-bottom tanks made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE). Their translucent white walls allow the liquid level to be seen. They are intended for above-ground installation and cannot be pressurized.

To see how this configuration compares with other solutions, explore our plastic tank applications.

Access suited to frequent batch preparation

An open top tank is useful when operations require easy access to the contents. In food processing, this access facilitates preparation and cleaning. In agriculture, this configuration can be considered for preparing fertilizer mixtures compatible with the tank.

A support for a clamp-on mixer can be added depending on the selected setup. We validate this modification before ordering; an open top alone does not confirm that the mixer can be attached directly to the tank wall. Our tank modification service allows us to review the required connections and modifications.

Comparing opening configurations

The choice of lid affects access during preparation and cleaning. Open top tank lids are optional and must be ordered with the tank.

Opening configurations and points to check
ConfigurationAccess to contentsPoint to check
Open top without a lidFull opening availableExposure of the contents in the operating environment
Removable dust coverFull opening once the cover is removedHandling and space to set the cover aside
Hinged lidOne-third lifts open; two-thirds is fixed to the tankAccess required to add ingredients and clean

The dust cover rests on the tank. Two-thirds of the hinged lid is welded to the tank, leaving one-third as a partial opening for routine operations. We select the lid configuration based on the access actually required, rather than capacity alone.

Specific gravity, temperature and liquid compatibility

The listed products are available with specific gravity ratings of 1.5 and 1.9. The choice depends on the liquid and operating conditions. A higher specific gravity rating does not, by itself, confirm compatibility with a corrosive product.

Before selecting the tank, we check:

  • The product to be contained and its concentration.
  • Its specific gravity and actual temperature.
  • Mixing and cleaning conditions.
  • The compatibility of the tank, fittings and their gaskets.

Our chemical compatibility guide helps with this review. Selection must account for the conditions specific to your application.

The resin’s food-contact compliance does not replace this validation. Food preparation may also involve specific requirements for temperature, cleaning and protection of the contents.

Plan the outlet and accessories before ordering

Open top tanks are supplied without a drain or graduated markings. Seeing the liquid through the wall therefore does not provide a precise volume measurement.

An important point at Agrico: we plan the inlets and outlets according to the installation before modifying the tank. For a tank used for mixing or cleaned frequently, outlet placement should be part of the initial selection.

Depending on the liquid and setup, we can consider polypropylene or PVC bulkhead fittings, stainless steel bolted fittings and ball valves. Their selection requires a compatibility review; not all accessories are suitable for every liquid.

When should you consider another configuration?

If your main need is storage with limited access from above, compare closed top vertical tanks. If the process requires a different geometry for draining, consider open top cone bottom tanks. For containment needs, explore secondary containment basins.

Frequently asked questions

Is a drain included?

No. We plan the required connection according to your installation.

Can the lid be purchased later?

The lids offered must be ordered with the tank; they are not sold separately. Plan this option when ordering.

Can a mixer be installed?

A support for a clamp-on mixer can be prepared. We must validate the setup before ordering.
