Male × Male NPT Threaded Reducer Nipples in Reinforced Polypropylene

A male × male NPT reducer nipple connects two female-threaded fittings of different sizes. It has an external thread at each end: one larger male end and one smaller male end.

We offer Schedule 80 reducer nipples made of glass-reinforced polypropylene. The listed combinations accommodate nominal connection sizes ranging from 1/2 to 3 inches, depending on the fitting selected.

The first requirement is straightforward: both fittings being connected must accept male NPT threads. If an existing connection is already male, a male × male reducer nipple will not screw directly onto it.

Male × Male or Male × Female: Choosing the Right Configuration

A change in diameter does not fully define the fitting. We also need to determine whether each end screws into another fitting or receives that fitting.

Male × female reducer bushings and male × male pipe nipples therefore serve different assemblies. We choose the configuration based on the two existing fittings, rather than relying solely on the word “reducer.”

Which Size Combinations Are Available?

The range includes the following combinations. Both ends are male NPT.

These values identify nominal connection sizes. They do not correspond to the outside diameters measured across the threads and do not specify the exact inside diameter of the passage.

Before ordering, identify both sizes and confirm the thread type. A size stated in inches does not, by itself, establish that an existing fitting has NPT threads.

Where Can a Reducer Nipple Be Used?

Between a Bulkhead Fitting and a Valve

A female NPT bulkhead fitting can receive the larger end of the reducer nipple. The smaller end can then receive a ball valve with a matching female NPT connection.

We first check the accessories already included with the valve. Some configurations include a male pipe nipple, so the available ends must be identified before adding another fitting.

In a Piping Assembly

A reducer nipple can also provide a transition to a female NPT tee fitting or an elbow fitting, when the threaded configuration matches.

Its purpose is to change the size between two connections. It does not replace an elbow for changing direction or a detachable coupling for easier disconnection.

To a Quick Connection or Hose

For a detachable connection, the reducer nipple can be connected to a matching Camlock adapter with a female NPT end.

A flexible hose does not attach directly to the reducer nipple’s threads. For a barbed connection, choose a hose barb adapter with the necessary threaded transitions.

Material Compatibility and Operating Conditions

We check the reinforced polypropylene’s compatibility with the liquid, its concentration and its actual temperature. The designation “Schedule 80” does not guarantee universal chemical compatibility or the same allowable pressure under all conditions.

Recommended operating conditions:

• 120 PSI at −18 °C / 0 °F.
• 150 PSI at 21 °C / 70 °F.
• 90 PSI at 66 °C / 150 °F.

When a pump is involved, specify the expected pressure or suction conditions. We assess the complete assembly, including valves, fittings and hose. These criteria apply across the different tank applications and industries.

Reducing the connection size does not guarantee a particular flow rate. The selection must also suit the installation’s transfer requirements.

What Is the Difference Between a Standard Pipe Nipple and a Reducer Nipple?

A standard pipe nipple has two male NPT ends of the same size. A reducer nipple has two male NPT ends of different sizes and is used to transition from one connection size to another.

Does This Reducer Nipple Connect Directly to an IBC Tote Valve?
